Gardaí investigating online threats against Tánaiste Simon Harris’s children have released a woman without charge.
The investigation had been supported by counter extremism gardaí from the Special Detective Unit after the threats were made online on Sunday morning. In a statement on Wednesday, Garda said the woman has now been released without charge and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. The woman, aged in her thirties, had been detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda station in the Dublin Metropolitan Region.
In a statement, An Garda Síochána said: “Gardaí investigating recent online threats against an elected representative have released the woman in her 30s that was arrested on Tuesday 2nd September 2025.
“The woman has been released without charge and a file will now be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. Investigations are ongoing.”
The Gardaí have said they are not providing any further information at this time.
Mr Harris said earlier this week that he had received “direct threats” at the weekend targeting his family. “Threatening children is despicable,” he said.
“As a father, I have very strong views and feelings on this as you can imagine. As a political leader, I find it unacceptable in every way,” the Tánaiste said in a statement.
“It is cowardice and it is a line that no decent society should tolerate being crossed,” Mr Harris added, while saying he would not be commenting further whilst the Garda investigation was ongoing.
It is not the first time the Fine Gael leader has experienced threats. In June 2024, a claim was made by an anonymous caller to the Samaritans helpline that there was an explosive device at Mr Harris’s family home, with the alarm raised by the organisation.
In August last year, a man was arrested over online threats made against Mr Harris, following a threat mentioning knives having been made on Instagram.
