Seven members of An Garda Síochána were assaulted and injured in three separate, violent incidents in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford last weekend.
Gardaí are investigating “serious public disorder” in Dungarvan from October 17th to 19th, which resulted in a number of officers requiring medical treatment.
At approximately 10pm on Friday, October 17, Gardaí responded to an incident at a home following a request for assistance from the National Ambulance Service.
Upon arrival, gardaí encountered an aggressive and intoxicated female and as they attempted to arrest her, a group of individuals at the scene physically assaulted three Garda members.
“Despite the sustained attack, the female was arrested and taken to Dungarvan Garda Station,” a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said, adding that all three gardaí were deemed unfit for duty following medical assessments, with one requiring further treatment at an emergency department.
“Two remain off duty at this time,” the spokesperson said.
In a separate, unrelated incident on the same day, Friday, October 17, another two gardaí were assaulted at Dungarvan Garda Station by a man who had been arrested under the Public Order Act.
According to the spokesperson, both gardaí required hospital treatment and remain off duty.
A third incident occurred shortly after 10pm on Sunday, October 19, when two gardaí responded to a disturbance involving two men on Sexton Street, Dungarvan.
Both gardaí were assaulted in responding to the incident, with “Use of Force options” employed by gardaí to restrain and arrest the men.
These two Gardaí remained on duty.
According to An Garda Síochána, a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incidents has been launched.
In the wake of the initial October 17 incidents, policing arrangements for the area were managed by the Regional Control Room and supported by neighbouring Garda units.
