The National Economic & Social Council recently produced a report entitled “Building a Virtuous Demographic Cycle”.
I have to admit that this Council is an entity of whose existence I was previously unaware, a lack of awareness I suspect is shared by many people, even those who are policy wonks by need or by inclination. It is a body whose Chair is appointed by the Government and whose membership comprises civil servants from various Government Departments, together with representatives of agricultural and farming organisations, employers’ organisations, trades unions, community and voluntary organisations, and environmental organisations. Its function is to “analyse and report on strategic issues relating to the efficient development of the economy and the achievement of social justice.”
