Slovakia’s Prime Minister, Robert Fico, has been injured in a shooting and taken to hospital, the country’s president has confirmed.

The shooting occurred after a government meeting in the town of Handlova, around 150 kilometres northeast of the capital, according to news station TA3.
The incident took place in front of the local House of Culture, where the prime minister was meeting with supporters.

A Reuters witness said that he heard multiple shots, after which he saw police detaining a man. The witness also said that he saw security officials push someone into a car and driving off.
