The Government published yesterday the submissions it received during the public consultation on Ireland’s priorities and programme during its upcoming EU Presidency, and the NGO wishlist can be summed up as follows: shore up EU funding for NGOs, strengthen democracy against the baddies, and vanquish hate once and for all.
That tongue-in-cheek summation is not, in reality, far off the mark. The distinct impression I developed while reading through a selection of the submissions was that they all could have been written by a single person, so similar were the views and positions expressed, despite the variety of organisations that stood behind them.
