When Episcopalian Princess Charlotte York falls in love with her divorce lawyer Harry Goldenblatt in Sex and the City it seems like her luck has finally run out. Harry explains that he made a promise to his dying mother that he would marry a Jewish girl. So Charlotte must convert to Judaism if she wants to marry him. She is happy to do so but it turns out, the Jews are not evangelical and according to SATC at least not interested in new recruits.
Charlotte is turned away by the local rabbi twice. Harry explains to Charlotte that it is part of the process for a rabbi to turn down converts three times to ensure they are serious. Harry tells her, “that’s the game, baby. They try to make it hard for you.” Charlotte understands the Jews are playing hard to get. This was a Rules Rabbi. This was a game Charlotte was an expert in – she invented the game.
