The summer holidays are over so instead of the usual calls to shorten the holidays, we now get the annual whinge over childcare. Straight out of the gate was Jennifer O’Connell at the Irish Times who complained, “Any parent who can solve the afterschool childcare equation deserves a medal. Spoiler alert: the solution, in many cases, is ‘granny’ or, perhaps less often, ‘granddad.’”
I had brief dealings with Ms O’Connell a while back for an article I wrote for the Irish Times and she was a perfectly nice woman who was understanding of various child pick – up deadlines I had. However, I have queries and issues with some of the underlying assumptions of her arguments.
