On Wednesday, 27 August in the city of Minneapolis, USA, a gunman opened fire on the congregation of a Catholic Church during mass, killing two children and injuring fourteen more and three adults. The gunman then took his own life. By Friday, the Minneapolis story had ceased to figure on RTÉ’s news bulletins. And the only mention of the story on the RTÉ news website is a report which was published just a few hours after the event which, inevitably, gives incomplete information. As the world struggled to understand what could have motivated a person to have gunned down little children attending mass, RTÉ quickly fell silent on what was a major news story.
RTÉ’s problem is that the killer of those children was a trans-identified man. So how could RTÉ report on this story while sticking to its policy of always using preferred pronouns and pretending that people really are whatever sex they say they are?
