The number of international protection applications made in May 2024 was 1,916 compared to 734 for the same period last year, new figures from the Department of Integration reveal.
The figures show the number of people claiming asylum in Ireland rose by 1,182 compared to figures for the month of May 2023 with the highest group population being single males.
The total number of asylum applicants so far this year is currently 8,694 with on average 56 daily, and 395 weekly arrivals.

39% of the arrivals were single males with the figure at 750 while 9% or 181 of the new arrivals were single females.
21% were couples at 397, with families with children accounting for 31% or 588.

The highest number of applicants came from Jordan (22% – 422) with Nigeria in second place (375 – 20%) Palestine (198 – 10%), Afghanistan (124 – 6%), Pakistan (111 – 6%), Somalia (106 -6%), Zimbabwe (72 – 4%), designated safe country Georgia (55 – 3%), and Eswatini (33 – 2%).
There were 173 requests for family reunification registered in May with 328 incident reports made as well as 399 transfer requests.
The number of persons who have been granted international protection who remain in IPAS accommodation was 5,595.
The number of persons who had their request for international protection granted in May was 414 with the number of persons granted status who left IPAS accommodation at 463 for the same period.
The total population of asylum seekers as of 2/6/2024 stands at 31, 032 of which 6,875 are accommodation in IPAS accommodation centres, 22,366 are in emergency accommodation, 346 in national reception centres, 566 at the City West hub, and 879 in temporary tented accommodation.
