A Tunisian man who slashed a woman in the face outside her home in Dublin has had the final year of his custodial sentence suspended on condition that he leave Ireland on completion of the remaining years of his sentence.
At the Dublin Circuit Criminal Criminal today, it was heard that Sami Skhiri (35), who arrived in Ireland only days before the attack, was in the midst of a “psychotic episode” when he attacked the woman who had approached when she noticed him on her property on the 30th of August 2023.
The woman sustained a 9cm shallow cut to her face in the attack.
As Gript reported in 2023, after his arrest, the victim noticed the man in her front garden and asked if he was okay. He responded by lunging at her and slashing her face and hand.
Garda Siobhan Frisbee told the court at the time that the incident left the woman “waking up having nightmares” and that she had suffered “serious facial injuries in the course of a serious unprovoked random attack”.
Skhiri said he was French-Tunisian and that that he was 34 year old and a a software engineer, however Gardaí had significant difficulty confirming his details when interviewing him saying that it “took hours” to get a name out of him.
Skhiri had no passport in his possession when arrested and did not supply identifying documents to Gardaí when arrested.
He was sentenced to a three year jail term with Judge Martin Nolan suspending the final year on condition that he leaves Ireland on completion of the first two years.
Skhiri’s sentence was backdated to August 2023, when he was first taken into custody meaning he is due to be released in August this year in accordance with the conditional suspension of the final year.
