A man is set to appear in court charged in connection with a vicious assault on a tourist in the O’Connell Strreet area of Dublin in the early hours of Sunday.
The victim, a Canadian believed to be aged in his forties, remains in hospital in a serious condition after the incident unfolded on O’Connell Street and Cathal Brugha Street this weekend.
At about 1am on Sunday, Gardaí were made aware to two incidents involving a number of individuals on Cathal Brugha Street and O’Connell Street Upper, with two suspects in their 20s and 30s arrested near the scene.
It is understood that the two men who attacked the victim were not known to him. The man was left in a critical condition, and was understood to be “fighting for his life” on Sunday evening after being brought to the Mater Hospital for “serious” injuries sustained earlier that day.
The other man arrested has been released from custody, while the man in his 20s has been charged and is due before the Criminal Courts of Justice.
Gardaí say that investigations into the incident are ongoing and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. They have appealed for anyone who was in the Cathal Brugha Street area, near the Living Room bar, between 12:40 am and 1am, along with anyone who was on O’Connell Street Upper, near the Spar, Funland, or Tourism office opposite the Spire around the same timeframe.
Anyone who may have camera footage, including dash cam footage, has been asked to make this available to Gardaí, while anyone with information should contact Store Street Gardai Station on 01 666 8800, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
