Minister for Health, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill has announced that the payment scheme for public healthcare workers with Long-Covid is to be extended until the end of the year following a recommendation from the Labour Court.
There are 159 employees currently on the temporary scheme, which was due to conclude on June 30 this year.
However, following a recommendation from the Labour Court that the scheme see a final extension to December 31, 2025, the Health Minister said that she would move to ensure the scheme is extended per the Court’s recommendation.
After that point, anyone remaining on the scheme would be transitioned to the Public Service Sick Leave Scheme.
A temporary ‘Special Scheme of Paid Leave’ was introduced in July 2022 for certain eligible public health sector employees with Long-Covid, with the stated intention of supporting “those employees working in Covid-19 environments in the time before PPE and vaccinations were readily available”.
