Everybody hates a tourist, according to Jarvis Cocker in his classic song, Common People. He’s not alone. As the summer season hits and Irish families attempt – despite the best efforts of pilots at Aer Lingus – to flee this rainy island to sunnier climes, you could be facing a cool welcome in places such as Majorca, the Canary Islands and even Venice.
In May “thousands of anti-tourism protesters paraded through the streets of Majorca, booing and jeering at foreign visitors in the first of many mass demonstrations planned by furious activist groups”.
