In the same week that Ireland established its surrogacy regulation authority, the controversial practice was slated at the United Nations and by a broad coalition of supporting organisations and countries, offering a timely reminder that if we’re going to go ahead with normalising surrogacy, we’re going to be pretty lonely doing so.
On Monday, Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill established the Assisted Human Reproduction Regulatory Authority (AHRRA), which is a new State agency for all things AHR (which means it’s largely about surrogacy, in the context of the legislation). The first appointed chairperson of the board, Professor Deirdre Madden described AHR technologies as a “critical component of modern healthcare”:
