The incident occurred in Mugla, Turkey where the married couple were holidaying.
A Turkish man has been arrested for allegedly pushing his heavily pregnant wife off a 1,000ft cliff in order to claim insurance money following her tragic death.
Hakan Aysal (40) reportedly planned the murder by first taking out personal accident insurance for his wife, Semra Aysal (32), who was seven months pregnant at the time in June 2018.
Mr Aysal had waited for three hours on top of the popular cliff before they found themselves alone. He is alleged to have pushed Ms Aysal off the cliff at this point, killing both her and the couple’s unborn baby.
The accused claims he did not see his wife fall from the cliff.
“After taking a photo, my wife put the phone in her bag. Later she asked me to give her the phone,” Aysal told the Fethiye High Criminal Court.
“I got up and then heard my wife scream behind me when I walked a few steps away to get the phone from her bag. When I turned back, she was not there. I did not push my wife,”
Having made himself the sole beneficiary of the accident insurance policy, Mr. Aysal made a full claim for £40,865 following his wife’s death, but was denied the money when a police investigation was announced.
Asked by prosecutors why he chose himself as the sole beneficiary of any insurance payout, Aysal said he was not aware of the fact.
“I did not examine the policy much. The banker arranged the paperwork. I just brought it to my wife to get it signed. I was not aware that there was such an article,” he said.
The Turkish court remanded Mr Aysal in custody for premeditated murder, with the victim’s brother, Naim Yolcu, welcoming the decision.
“When we went to the Forensic Medicine Institute to get the body, Hakan was sitting in the car. My family and I were destroyed, but Hakan did not even appear sad,” Yolcu told the Daily Mail.
“My sister was always against taking out loans. However, after she died, we learned that she had three loans taken by Hakan on behalf of my sister.
“Also, Semra had a fear of heights, what extreme sport is she going to be doing when she is scared of heights?”
