Five people have lost their lives on the Irish Roads since Monday this week bringing the total number of road deaths this year to 109 according to figures from An Garda Síochána for the year to date.
GSOC investigation underway after man killed in early hours of Tuesday morning on Baldoyle Coast Road.
A man in his 40s was killed after being struck by a suspected stolen vehicle at around 1am.
The vehicle failed to remain at the scene of the incident.
Despite the best efforts of emergency services the man was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
It is understood that the car was being driven erratically by so-called joy riders and that Gardaî had been alerted to this prior to the fatal collision with the man.
A referral has been made to GSOC who said, “GSOC received a referral from An Garda Síochána during the early hours of Wednesday, 17 July, following a road traffic incident in Portmarnock. The referral was made by a Garda Superintendent under section 102(1) of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005. The matter is now under examination by GSOC further to section 91 of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005,”
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the hit and run.
Woman in her 30s killed in Carlow collision between car and van.
On Monday last Denise O’Meara was killed in a collision between the car she was driving and a van which took place in County Carlow.
The accident happened on the N80 near Ballintrane at around 5.50pm on Monday evening.
Two men who were travelling in the van were rushed to hospital with serious injuries.
The front passenger of the van has since been discharged from hospital while the driver is recovering in the Mater Hospital after having undergone surgery.
Described by her father Denis as “the perfect daughter”, Ms. O’Meara will be laid to rest after a funeral Mass at St Mary’s Church, Portroe, this Saturday at 12pm.

Gardaí have also requested that members of the public refrain from sharing images of the crash site online.
Two people in their 70s were killed in a two-car collision in Donegal.

The incident took place at around 11.50pm last night on the N56 at Kilmacrennan.
A woman in her 40s who was the occupant of the second vehicle was taken to Letterkenny University Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
Local diversions are currently in place, with the road closed overnight to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.
An examination of the scene was due to take place this morning.

Young man killed in Finglas motorbike crash
A man aged in his 20s died in a motorcycle accident on the Old North Road in Finglas.
The single vehicle crash took place at approximately 2pm yesterday.
A Garda spokesperson said, ““Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.”
“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area at the time are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardai.”
