The Chief Commissioner of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission, Liam Herrick, gave an interesting speech at the weekend in which he made the case that the “human rights system established after World War 2 is now in deep crisis”.
I agree entirely, but not for the reasons given by Mr Herrick, whose views have to be taken seriously as a senior figure in a State-funded (to a total of approximately €8.4 million in 2023) NGO, with a seat at many influential tables, and as the former Executive Director of both the Irish Council for Civil Liberties and the Irish Penal Reform Trust, two enormously significant organisations.
