To paraphrase C.S. Lewis, there’s nothing people love more than having an excuse to be cruel while still looking morally good. People relish the opportunity to destroy somebody else, and seem like the “good guy” in the process.
In this context, it’s worth thinking about the massive popularity of a particularly pernicious kind of social media content – namely, drama channels on platforms like YouTube which are solely dedicated to tearing people down and humiliating them at their life’s lowest moment.
