Caitlyn Jenner has filed the paperwork to run for governor of Democrat stronghold California as a Republican, “fiscally conservative and socially liberal” candidate.
California faces a potential “recall” election, after a petition against the current Democrat governor, Gavin Newsom, reached the required number of signatures to trigger a vote.
Jenner – a former Olympic athlete and reality TV actor who identifies as transgender – plans to contest the election to dethrone Newsom. According to Axios, Jenner has put together a team that includes several of former US President Donald Trump’s political advisers.
“Californians want better and deserve better from the governor,” tweeted Jenner.
“For too long, career politicians have over-promised and under-delivered. We need a leader with the vision and resolve to see it through.”
A self-described “fiscal conservative and social liberal”, Jenner has blasted the governor over his banning of fracked gas, and weak sentencing for criminals.
Banning fracking only increases our dependence on foreign oil, jeopardizes good paying jobs and generates less state and local tax revenue to fund our schools, health care and firefighters. Tell Gavin we need less pandering to big tech donors. Join me. https://t.co/ytCnlUqzU0 https://t.co/Qd85YttJik

This is horrible and also avoidable. Gavin’s District Attorneys across California are releasing dangerous criminals back on to our streets. Enough is enough. #RecallGavin https://t.co/zFfxGxHWDz

Don’t sweat it, @JoyVBehar. I’m not about cancel culture. I know where your heart is. California has bigger issues than pronouns. https://t.co/epPedRAjW8

Governor Newsom has faced intense criticism and backlash for what many see as a mismanagement of the covid-19 pandemic, with business owners being forced to keep their businesses closed despite falling infection rates.
Jenner’s campaign will reportedly be formally launched at a later date.
