EU politicians are publicly celebrating what has been a disastrous midterm election cycle for United States President Donald Trump.
Members of the European Parliament, as well as those serving in individual member states, took to both social media and legacy news outlets on Wednesday, November 4, to express their jubilation at the fact that Trump had lost both the US House and Senate to Democratic Party opponents.
“Good morning. This is the beginning of the end for Trump,” Fianna Fáil MEP Barry Andrews wrote on X.
“Finally, a rejection of his depravity, his corruption and his foreign wars.”
Also taking a victory lap was Spain’s embattled Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who pushed to link the US president’s crushing defeat to what awaited his country’s own rising right-wing.
“Yesterday, American society voted against the policies that only impoverish. Against hate. Against machismo. Against climate denialism and against the privileges of the elites,” he said.
“It happened in Brazil. It just happened in the US. And it will happen soon in Spain.”
Sánchez added that the right-wing wave being ridden by his election rivals was now “crumbling”, despite polls indicating a substantial rise in support for rightist parties in Spain just weeks ahead of the country’s snap parliamentary election.
Polish politicians also expressed jubilation at the Republican wipe-out, with many officials in Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s struggling government attempting to link Trump’s electoral defeat to a supposed decline in the fortunes of their own right-wing rivals.
“Truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will deny him three times,” the country’s Foreign Minister,
Radosław Sikorski, wrote, also mocking “big man” Elon Musk for failing to help the Republicans stave off the defeat.
“See, big man, politics is harder than you thought,” the minister told Musk.
Climate campaigners have also taken Trump’s defeat as evidence their stars are once again rising, with the co-chair of the German Green Party, Franziska Brantner, describing the result as “fantastic”.
“I am truly delighted that the fight was worthwhile, that it was worthwhile to show that there is an alternative to Trump and his policies, which have harmed citizens not only in the USA, but worldwide,” she told German media.
“From this, one can draw hope for the democratic system in the USA and that it will hopefully get back on its feet,” she added, saying the election will serve as a clear impediment for “Trump and his billionaires”.
