Last week two stories caught my attention. One was the tragic deaths by arson of four members of a family in their Waterford home. The other was the increasing pressure on now-Foreign Minister Helen McEntee on her time as then-Justice minister, and her huge botch-up on Garda whistleblowers.
The first made me want to speak about the increasing brutality and savagery in this country. The second made me want to talk about the alarming level of mismanagement that our government seems willing to tolerate in the police, in other branches of the state, and also in its ministers. I wondered what to choose, but then I realised I would be talking about the same thing: impunity.
