In a move to enforce “parity and equal dignity between men and women”, Portugal’s President has promulgated a new law banning the burka in public spaces.
In an official statement published on Tuesday, August 18th 2026, the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic confirmed the enactment of the decree establishing identification, safety, and prevention rules in public areas, noting that the measure touched upon an issue of “great social and cultural sensitivity.”
