Gardaí are seeking an extradition warrant for the prime person of interest in the murder of Jamey Carney, who was found dead in Killarney on July 7th.
The Kerry’s Eye newspaper reports that the file recommends charging Ms Carney’s boyfriend, 28-year-old Ahmed Al-Saqar, with murdering the New Yorker at her home on the Muckross Road.
Al-Saqar is currently in custody in Jordan, having fled Ireland after Ms Carney was killed.
Officers investigating her killing have now sent the file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
It is understood that Ahmed Al-Saqar travelled to Jordan via Dublin and Istanbul in the hours immediately after the mother of one was killed, and before her body was discovered.
The Irish Mirror confirms that officers have sent the file, which asks for Al-Saqar to be prosecuted over the 43-year-old’s death, to the DPP.
The DPP must now examine the file and decide if there is enough evidence for prosecution.
Al-Saqar was detained in his native country of Jordan last month, but doubts persist regarding the next steps because no bilateral extradition treaty exists between Jordan and Ireland.
The extradition warrant is being sought under the trade and co-operation agreement for countries outside the EU.
Garda sources are aware this may be difficult to obtain.
The Irish Independent reports that Irish detectives have made “major progress” on evidence including DNA, forensics, pathology, witness statements and CCTV footage – with reports that Killarney Gardaí carried out a “trojan amount of work” on the Carney murder investigation.
