The third world war could have broken out last month. If the (allegedly Iranian) conspiracy to murder Donald Trump in Turkey had succeeded, an unelected President Vance would not merely have been obliged to declare war on Iran, but he probably would have invoked NATO’s Article 5, in which an attack on one state is seen as an attack on them all.
Most of Europe would thus have been obliged to join in a war with Iran, a calamity that would very possibly have enabled Putin to finish off his Ukrainian war by nuclear means, just as a previously unelected American President had finished off the war against Japan.
