The Department of Defence has shelved previous plans to purchase a €300 million Multi-Role Vessel (MRV) suited for humanitarian or evacuation operations likely in the Mediterranean, Gript has learnt, amid internal rancour among naval officers that the vessel was ill-suited to Ireland’s emerging maritime-security requirements.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a naval source told Gript of a frustrated procurement process between the Department of Defence and Finance over the planned purchase, with the dropping of plans for an MRC opening up potential for a more combative frigate to replace it.
