A manhunt is under way for a man understood to be an asylum seeker after a young mother was brutally killed in her own home.
Jamey Carney, aged in her forties, was brutally beaten at home on the Muckross Road in Killarney, Co Kerry, on Tuesday. It is understood that she was found by her teenage daughter.
Ms Carney, 43, was originally from the Westchester area of New York but had moved to Ireland five years ago.
The chief suspect is an asylum seeker who was known to Ms Carney. He is believed to have escaped the area shortly after her death.
The Irish Mirror reports that the suspect in the case is Middle Eastern, and had previously lived in France — sparking fears that he may have tried to flee Ireland after the killing. There are hopes that the suspect can be apprehended before he attempts to flee the country.
“There is a major search for him,” a source told the Irish Mirror on Tuesday night. “We have learned the suspect, who is in his 20s, has been living at an IPAS centre in Killarney but knew Ms Carney and occasionally stayed at her house in the Muckross Road area of the town – where her body was found yesterday afternoon.”
The paper said the suspect in the killing is believed to have been living in Ireland since the middle of 2024 and was an applicant for international protection.
It is understood that Ms Carney worked for Relate-Care, a healthcare consulting company.
Her social media profiles show her recently celebrating the fourth of July. She described herself as a “New Yorker in Ireland” and often posted photos of herself with her daughter and a male partner.
She often posted about her life in Ireland on social media, including sharing an image of a house and a set of keys last September, with friends congratulating the mother of one.
Ms Carney is now the eighth woman to die violently in Ireland this year so far, and the sixth to die violently in the past six weeks alone.
It follows the death of another young mother, Masumeh Manojan, in May, who was allegedly murdered near an IPAS centre in Cliften, Co Galway.
Another woman, Adina Raluna Constantin, aged in her fifties, died on Sunday afternoon following an assault in her home. Her partner has appeared in court charged with her murder.
Gardai are believed to be looking at a definite line of enquiry in relation to the death of Ms Carney, who was “well liked” in the local community.
One source told the Irish Mail that Gardai are looking for one man who is of particular interest in the case, with it understood to have been “a particularly gruesome scene.”
The source said that it appears the mother of one was beaten with an improvised weapon which gardai are in the process of recovering.
“The Muckross Road area in Killarney is a well-off, highly sought after area. To say this is out of place is an understatement,” added the source.
In a statement on the death of the young mother, a Garda spokesperson said that the force are appealing for witnesses following the discovery if a body of a female in Killarney on Tuesday, 7 July.
“Gardai and emergency services responded to an incident at a domestic residence this afternoon.
“A woman in her 40s was pronounced deceased at the scene.
“The State pathologist has been notified and a post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course. The scene is currently preserved for technical examination. An incident room has been established at Killarney Gardai station,” said the statement.
“Gardai are appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward. Anyone who was in the Muckross Road area of Killarney between the evening of the 6 and the afternoon of the 7 july 2026, and who may have camera footage, including CCTV and dashcam, is asked to provide the footage to investigating Gardai.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064 667 1160, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.”
