South Dublin County Council has lost a councillor as Sinn Féin’s Niamh Fennell steps down to emigrate to Australia, like so many of the country’s young people, citing the impossibility of buying a house or “building an independent life” in her native Ireland.
There is something about emigration that makes the abstract real. Endless talk about a housing crisis only really hits when a young person, a friend or family member, decides that their prospects of securing a home are better elsewhere.
