Uisce Éireann has issued a ‘Boil Water Notice’ for approximately 22,000 people in Wexford Town just days before Christmas.
The State agency issued the notice to customers supplied by the Newtown Water Treatment Plant due to untreated raw water entering the supply.
According to Uisce Éireann, its drinking water experts are “working to rectify the disinfection issues at the treatment plant and lift the notice as quickly and as safely as possible”, in consultation with the HSE.
Padraig Lyng of Uisce Éireann said that the notice was issued to “protect public health,” and apologised for the “inconvenience caused to homes and businesses”.
Affected customers are advised that water must be boiled for drinking; drinks made with water; preparation of salads and similar foods; brushing teeth; and making ice.
“Customers are reminded that the water is safe to consume once boiled,” a spokesperson for Uisce Éireann said.
