The vicious war in Ukraine has ground on for almost four long years now since the Russian invasion in March 2022, and while the worst of the bombings or mass casualty events may still garner headlines, public attention has largely waned or been distracted by other conflicts and concerns.
But the death toll has inexorably risen, because the real cost of a prolonged and bitter war of attrition is not paid in dollars or rubles but in the wasted lives of young men and women whose blood is spilled on the battlefield. It is very difficult, in the fog of war, to know what data to rely on, but it has been claimed that at least half a million soldiers between both sides of the conflict have been killed with perhaps over a million additional casualties. The sheer scale of fatalities has not been seen in the region since the Second World War.
