“The end of civilisation is nigh: prepare to meet thy doom,” have been popular observations for gloomy conservatives throughout history. Mostly their predictions been wrong, occasionally catastrophically right: Russia in 1917, Germany in 1929, Cambodia in 1968 or Rwanda 1994.
History’s path is only clear in the rear-view mirror: car headlights usually bounce off the wall of impenetrable fog of contemporaneous reality that paints the optic nerve with an impenetrable whitewash.
