This morning, the Department of Housing put out a press release with the triumphant headline: “Minister Browne announces allocation of almost €700m in additional funding to accelerate housing delivery.”
At first glance, it sounds impressive. The Minister for Housing, James Browne, says the €696 million will fund 4,600 new social and affordable homes, revive vacant housing, address homelessness, and help homeowners with defective concrete blocks. He talks about “significant progress” in recent years and housing delivery “at a scale not seen since the 1970s.”
