Among the guiding principles of a radical concept transforming the Irish educational landscape are phrases like “unlearning and reconstructing” and “acting in solidarity”. These are some of the pillars of ‘Global Citizenship Education,’ which the Government defines as an educational “process” to help the public “engage with and learn about” topics like climate change and “global inequality and injustice”.
Global Citizenship Education (GCE) is transforming the way children in Ireland are being educated from, quite literally, infancy through to third-level, and is looking to transform the views of the public “about the issues that will define the 21st Century” along the way. It is a process that has been properly underway for the last decade, and that is coming into sharper focus as the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) deadline of 2030 looms large before us.
