A study from one of the world’s foremost academic institutions seems to hint at that which many already feared: that making use of ChatGPT, or other similar ‘Large Language Models’ (LLMs), for certain activities diminishes brain activity, which in essence means that it’s potentially affecting users’ ability to think.
I say “seems to hint at” and “potentially affecting” because there are caveats that have to be noted from the off. The first is that the paper has yet to be peer reviewed, and the second is connected to that: it deals with a small sample size, and is focused on a specific set of activities centred around essay writing. Both of these factors may well be raised during the peer review process.
