An emergency press conference was held by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson today after the Nordic country reportedly experienced an average of one bombing a day for the first 27 days of 2025.
Speaking to reporters, Kristersson admitted that there was currently “no control” with regard to the escalating violence in the country calling it “domestic terrorism”.
During an emergency meeting of legislators, Kristersson announced the acceleration of new legislation targeting juvenile involvement in criminal activities.
“Sweden is in the midst of a new wave of violence; it’s primarily the bombings that are increasing, with almost one occurring every day,” Kristersson said.
“It’s abundantly clear that we do not have control over this wave of violence; otherwise, we wouldn’t be here,” he added.
Last year alone, there were 317 total bomb blasts reported by police in the formally peaceful country.
Sweden has been facing unprecedented numbers of violent incidents involving minors with police estimating that in 20241,700 under-18s were active members of criminal networks.
Kristersson says that those involved in these crimes show “total indifference” to the consequences of their actions.
Among recent measures aimed at fighting Sweden’s migrant fuelled crime numbers is a proposal to amend the country’s constitution to enable authorities to strip dual nationals of their Swedish citizenship if they are convicted of gang crime related offenses.
It has also been proposed that those convicted of crimes in Sweden could in future serve prison sentences overseas after a government commissioned investigation made the recommendation.
At the time special investigator Mattias Wahlstedt said,”Foreign nationals with deportation orders might be particularly suitable, but there’s no reason to limit this only to non-Swedish citizens”,.
