The local and European elections have rightfully dominated the news cycle in recent days, and not just in Ireland. Britain is focused on the campaign trail in the lead up to their July 4 general election, while a majority of EU nations also grapple with the results of what was in many places a tumultuous result – not least among them France, where the political scene is wobbling following President Macron’s decision to dissolve the parliament in the face of Le Pen’s Rassemblement National’s success.
So while it is understandable that many of the continent’s eyes have been focused inwards, it does mean that as a result we’ve missed some dramatic developments on Europe’s eastern border. In the last few weeks, in the intensification of a crisis underway since 2021, a number of Polish soldiers manning the border have been seriously injured in clashes with groups of migrants attempting to cross from Belarus, with one soldier dying of his wounds just last week. It was the first fatality since the beginning of the crisis.
