The government has been told that hotel accommodation for Ukrainian refugees has been exhausted and is essentially at capacity.
The news comes as the influx of new arrivals continues apace, with around 1,000 Ukrainian asylum seekers entering the country just over the weekend.
The government is now planning to use emergency accommodation for refugee arrivals, such as the Millstreet Arena facility in Cork, which will be used to house as many as 300 refugees. This is reported to be a more temporary accommodation solution until something more long-term can be made available.
To date, well over 24,000 refugees have arrived in Ireland to date. 16,000 of these are in State accommodation.
So far community centres, hotels, scout halls, parochial halls, mountain dorm buildings, sports clubs, old convents, monasteries, and many other public buildings have been converted into accommodation for the new arrivals.
Not only this, but almost 4,000 Ukrainian students have entered the Irish education system.
The government has announced a new primary-level language module where Irish students will be offered the opportunity to study Ukrainian to help “integration.”
