Sinn Féin’s Health Spokesperson, David Cullinane TD, has boasted in the Dáil that the opposition have given FFG “remarkable” support as regards covid-19 and the State-imposed lockdown, even despite the “huge difficulties” for workers and families caused by those policies.

“I think in European terms,”, Cullinane told Health Minister Stephen Donnelly on Wednesday, “when you look across the political spectrum in different parts of Europe, the support that you have got, and your government has got, from the Opposition, by and large in relation to the responding to covid has been quite remarkable, given the huge difficulties that all of these public health restrictions have brought about for workers and for families and businesses.”
Cullinane went on urging all politicians to continue to “keep people safe” by “following the public health advice.
“We all get huge amounts of lobbies from members of the public who have a lot of different views in relation to public health restrictions,” he said.
“Sometimes, some people argue for more for different reasons. Sometimes people argue for less and do not want any restrictions in place. And we all have to show leadership. We all have to very clearly follow the public health advice and make sure that at all times it’s about keeping people safe.”
He added: “Nobody wants public health restrictions of the nature of those that had to be introduced over the past 12 months. Those restrictions were put in place because of the need to deal with a highly infectious virus that caused a pandemic. People were dying and action had to be taken. I accept that.”
