16 nursery students and 2 teachers have been wounded during a knife attack at a créche in China.
Footage of the suspect being arrested by police has been circulating on social media following the attack in the Guanxi region of southern China.
According to Xinhua, Chinese State-run media, two of the children were seriously injured, and all victims were quickly rushed to hospital following the incident.
Local news reports that the suspect was a 24-year-old local man from the city where the attack took place.
Following the attack, many Chinese people have taken to Weibo – a major Chinese social media platform – to express their sympathies for the victim and outrage and the event.
“This news really breaks my heart,” said one user.
“Those poor children have done nothing wrong, they are innocent,” said another.
Several posts called for the perpetrator to be severely punished, with some even calling for the death penalty.
China has seen an unusual spike in knife crime in recent months, with one man in the city of Kunming being shot and killed by Chinese police in January for attacking seven people outside of a primary school. He had held a young boy hostage shortly before the shooting.
One of the victims injured in that attack later passed away from their wounds.
